“The full Gumby” – why does that sound so terribly wrong to my ears. Is that “You can Leave Your Hat On” playing in the background?

…that Didn’t Happen.
Today I was going to sort some banking in Bondi Junction. I had received a letter from my Dutch bank that my account needed more authentication than was on file.
I can only assume they needed to make sure I wasn’t a terrorist trying to fund crime a few hundred Euros at a time.
You see, when I moved to Australia I kept my Dutch bank account to make it easy for family back home to send me gifts for birthdays, Christmases, and other such occasions. They’d put it into my bank account in Euros and I’d withdraw it down here in Australian Dollars.
Alas, no longer.
Anyway, to get back to the story. They apparently need a certified copy of my passport to continue to allow me to exchange money with my relatives. So I needed to go to the Dutch Embassy in Bondi Junction.
I booked a day of leave.
I drove to the station.
I checked I had all my documents with me…
I clearly should have checked a little more in advance. After a very brief call to the Embassy this now has become a much more extensive undertaking. And with the urgency gone, I withdrew home to formulate a new plan.
I’m going to investigate whether keeping a Dutch account is still the cheapest approach to handle international transfers. It used to be, but now it just feels like a hassle.
And a good thing I wasn’t planning to travel any time soon.
Time to take this blogging thing more seriously (because I say so). Time to set myself a challenge.
I’m going to attempt writing a post every day for the next year. I will take bets on how quickly this will devolve. Please leave your money in the comments.
The rules I will follow (because 365 posts itself is clearly not challenging):
- Write one post every day, on the day… no writing ahead
- “On the day”, defined as midnight-to-midnight wherever I happen to be at the time
- The post will be about the most interesting thing1 of the preceding 24 hours to the best of my ability
I will tag all posts in this series with “365”. If I have some trouble getting started, I reserve the right to start counting 365 days once I get the routine going (no later than August).
What’s in it for you? … who knows…
What’s in it for me? … a blog… and dinner, most definitely a fancy dinner to celebrate. I might even blog it.
