The Sydney Toy & Game Expo is only a week away.
If you’ve ever played a game of Carcassonne, Settlers of Catan or Ticket to Ride and enjoyed it but didn’t know what else to get, this is the event for you.
Personally, I am not interested in the toys at the expo, and I’ll give the LEGO exhibition pieces just a quick look over on the day.
The most interesting part of the expo for me is the Games Library. At the event they have hundreds of games in a trial library, where you can grab that game that has always seemed interesting and then take it to a table for a good run-through. What better way to make up your mind about a game than to actually play it?
Ken, Abbey and myself will head over to find new games for Wednesday Nights. We try to get 4-5 quick games into the day, and then typically walk away with 2-3 new games bought from the exhibitors.
Some games also have special demonstration booths, where someone who already knows the rules will talk you through the game. This can be helpful if you don’t like reading rules.
And, if you have a competitive streak… there are also tournaments.
If you reckon you can beat all comers at a game of Catan, Carcassonne, Dominion or Ticket to Ride, you might want to join a tournament and compete for an as-yet undisclosed prize.
And even if you do not walk away with any purchases or winnings, $20 for a day playing a range of fun board games is not a bad investment. Or you can go for the two-day pass if you’re really keen.
I’m sure there’ll be an extra ad-hoc post on the day with my acquisitions.
