Day 271 – Cats! On the Internet!

95 – The Top 100 Cat Blogs

I Am the Shadow
I Am the Shadow

Cat pictures are like catnip to internet users (to mix some metaphors).

I wasn’t surprised to find a top-100 about cats on the internet… as much as I was to find a top-100* for blogs dedicated just to cats. It’s a bit like discovering 100 volumes written by R. R. Martin on just Daenerys alone. Not an unpleasant discovery, nor an outright disturbing one, but something that makes you wonder if there wouldn’t have been a more productive outlet for all that effort.

Unperturbed

The list is adorned with more than a few examples of blogs written from the cat’s perspective. It’s an interesting conceit, and entertaining when well executed… but also hardly novel at this point. Just now, I briefly considered starting a blog from the perspective of our cats’ food bowls, favourite lounging spots, or the litter tray. Or maybe all the above?

That Hand... My Head... NAOW.
That Hand… My Head… NAOW.

There was also more than one blog dedicated to the review of pet accessories. I’m afraid to look on YouTube, because I suspect there will be a pet-accessory-review-by-cats-themselves channel. Let’s call this Rule 34-B of the Internet… if it exists on the internet, there is a cat version of it on the internet.

Obie Halfie

The list also has a blog of cats-with-synthesizers pictures … which we’ll call Rule 34-C of the Internet… no matter how narrowly you define the sub-topic, there are sites dedicated to cats in connection with the selected sub-topic.

The blog that I liked the most on the list though is “Stuff On My Cat“. I have no idea where people find these patient cats that allow stacking of multiple items… but I do know a few owners that are going to get violently murdered in their sleep (just look at those eyes!)

Catroissant
Catroissant

Most important in all this though; because the internet loves cat pictures so much, there is really no way to go wrong with a cat-post. So this can be my contribution to the decline of modern society for the week.

* Note: the link at the top has in fact only 23 blogs, but some further research has shown the existence of many more blogs in this CATegory. I have no doubt the total easily eclipses 100.

Day 205 – Holly for the Cats

Holly brought a gift to the gym today. A gift for the cats. Primarily because she has no cats to give the freebie to herself, but let’s not quibble about the details.

The cats certainly didn’t.

Are These Playthings?
Are These Playthings?

I don’t think Obie saw the point at first.

WANT!
WANT!

That changed quickly enough once the tin cracked open though.

Cat-Dawg...
Cat-Dawg…

The dog is really submissive around the cats; he isn’t confident about pushing in, but he does know what he wants. He was sitting waiting hopefully for his dinner.

Coaxed From the Bed

Amber got the diet option, but she needed some coaxing. I think she thought she was getting called for nail-clipping… her second-least-favourite activity.

Once she gets going she’s unstoppable though.

Dejected
Dejected

And again the dog was sitting on the sidelines quietly hoping.
(He has had several snacks and meals since… don’t feel bad for him!)

Day 197 – Space-Time

This morning I discovered a rupture in the fabric of space-time down the hallway near the master bedroom.

We have two cats.

In many ways they are polar opposites:

  • Obie is white (mostly)
    Amber is black (mostly)
  • Obie enjoys showers (once wet)
Amber hates showers (with a passion)
  • Obie hates lightning
Amber sits at the screen door watching the lightning barely out of range of the rain splattering about her paws(!?)
  • Obie loves people (but is less cuddly these days)
Amber is terrified of strangers (but not anymore)

When Amber wants something in the morning, she meows. She jumps on the bed. She walks over us to the other side of the bed. She jumps back off the bed, circles around, rinse, repeat.

The bedroom door is closed these days.

When Obie wants something in the morning, he scratches at the bedroom door, meowing and waits for some sucker to open it. This is very effective because he pauses random periods between attempts making it impossible to sleep through.

The hallway door is also closed these days.

On the whole, the airlock solution works well. The cats can do whatever they feel like to the hallway door, and with the second door in between me and the sound, I can barely tell when they do it. I readily sleep through their attempts now.

The Purrpetrator
The Purrpetrator

This morning Obie was the purrpetrator of disrupting my sleep. At about 8am he was scratching at the bedroom door hoping to be let in. I got up, carried him out of the hallway and closed the hallway door, and got back to bed.

That should have been it till I woke up properly.

At 8:30am, the same thing happened with a second Obie. I locked Obie-2 on the other side of the door as well and went back to bed.

Then at 9am, once more, the same thing. Obie-3 also left on the other side, I finally got to sleep till I could sleep no more at about 10am. Miraculously, when I went to feed the cats, there was only one Obie left on the other side of the door.

I have no idea what happened to the other two, nor which Obie we now have left.

The only logical conclusion I can come to though is that the other two came through a tear in space-time that recurred this morning somewhere between 8am and 9am, somewhere in the hallway. I presume that a similar phenomenon swallowed two of the Obies in the kitchen later; I just hope it was the corresponding copies, otherwise the universes might now be out of balance.
