Return to Old Form

I am returning to old favourites.

I have let my gym routine slide far too much over the last two-three months under the pressures of work; it’s important to do a good job, but I may have taken it a little too far. So, over my break, I am working on putting back together my exercise routine.

I have decided that Pump (weights) is not that important now. I have let some excess weight build up, and cardio is going to be my best new friend. And because my back has been suffering from a lack of flexibility as well, Yoga and Pilates are the other main pillar of my renewed routine.

I’ll have to work out how to integrate my routine with my commute to the city from Feb onwards, but I’m sure I’ll work something out.

And today was at long last the start of my own personal Wet’n’Wild season with Steven and Holly. I had been one time earlier in the season on a cold freezy day, which proved a bad plan. But so far December hadn’t been very lucky either… the weather has been too unpredictable and/or torrential. I think we vowed to work on the weekends over the coming months and get more sessions in.

I haven’t worked out any other resolutions just yet.

Learning and Other Curves

I have turned my 365 earnings and my birthday present from my parents into an Adobe CS6 Master Suite. I am now the proud owner of All-Things-Adobe to further my creative future. Now I just need to learn how to use it all.

The installer barfed icons for 16 new products onto my Windows 8 Start screen.
They all range from complex to nigh-on-incomprehensible.
I need some training.

I had hoped to start learning today, but the day got away from me a bit. I had to get up early to make my 7:30am massage, which was both nice and horrible at the same time.

Then my day got both better and weirder at the gym. Apparently it was the third anniversary of the gym and there was an 80s Aerobics theme on. Meaning all the staff/instructors and many of the guests had dressed up in various short-shorts, lycra, and garish bright colours.

It wasn’t entirely an unpleasant sight.

I do think I let it go to my head, or out of it. I worked harder than I normally do, and now my legs don’t feel my own. I hope I have enough reserves for Yoga, because Thursday Yoga didn’t turn out so well… they had forgotten to substitute a sick instructor so they improvised at the last moment with someone who wasn’t quite up to the task.

By the time I finished my Saturday ritual with some reading at Michel’s I was already 7 hours into my day. And I’ve frittered away another 3 hours since with the Internet. I better get going with some real work and chores now, or I’ll feel horribly guilty tomorrow.

Cardio is terrible and I hate running.

I don’t even run from the back of the treadmill; I prefer to set it to 6km/h and just walk for 30 minutes while letting my mind drift. I never got the hang of running. I’ve heard say how great the runners high is, but it doesn’t sound quite enough to make it worth it. Marathon runners say the same things about the joy of having your toenails fall off, so I guess that puts the matter into some perspective.

Day 274 – Gym Songs

92 – 100 Best Workout Songs of All Time

This list cannot possibly be right. It’s absolutely clear that the no.1 best anything-song of all time is “Everything is Awesome”. Ever. (Also: do yourself a favour and go see the LEGO movie!)

Having said that, there are some good work-out songs on that list.
Ones that I’ve specifically enjoyed hearing around the gym, below.

98. Seven Nation Army – White Stripes
Perhaps a little up-tempo, but it kinda works with a weights routine. As long as the weights are modest, because otherwise it might kill.

66. Joker and the Thief – Wolfmother
Better tempo for weights on the off beats, or alternatively punches on all the beats. Maybe a bicep routine? Or just running on a treadmill.

47. Live and Let Die – Guns N’ Roses
Maybe lunges for the slow parts and some heavy cardio for the fast parts? Or just pretend you’re James Bond and you’re running for your life. That’d do the trick.

Rowing. Definitely rowing for this one.

That moment… just when you think you perhaps should leave the gym. One more time through?

I may actually have to see about turning these into a playlist for the gym, or for walking at night. Haven’t done that for too long either. And now, sleep.

Day 260 – A Long One

I had a long and busy day today. I foolishly accepted responsibility for too many meetings in one day tomorrow and I had to prepare for all of them today. So tomorrow I’ll be scribing one meeting, brainstorming another right after and then chairing a third right after that. A 7 hour marathon of meetings.

I’ll also be doing this with a sore midriff. I have been to the gym Monday and Tuesday, but to spare my shoulders I took on extra challenge on the legs and core. Which seemed like a great plan at the time, but might have been a strategic mistake in retrospect. Time will tell.

And tonight was fun relaxation at Ken’s with a cornucopia of cheese, fruit and chocolate, followed by a plethora of pizza and a sufficience of 7 Wonders. I feel thoroughly entertained. But also quite tired.

And I have to be up again at 7 to get a few things sorted before my first meeting starts.
So I’m going to leave this short and safeguard my rest and sanity.

Day 258 – No Sprain, No Gain

I made it back to the gym!

It felt great!

Until it was over; then I felt a bit worn. And now I feel exactly how it feels to not have been to the gym properly for 2-3 weeks. But that’s also a good feeling in its own way. Nothing quite like heavy weary legs to feel I’ve done what needs doing.

I was expecting to have to go much easier on my shoulder tonight. It’s been getting sore overnight, and tingling arm when I’ve slept on my left side. Instead it seems like the exercise did my shoulder some good.

I wasn’t sure if my form was okay, but Nikki assures me I was as straight as I always am. I put a little less weight on the upper-body exercises, but not that much less once I felt it was going okay. I’ll see how it feels tomorrow. My abs are liking this work-out less than my shoulder actually.

I was hoping to think through some complex thoughts tonight, but the brain-fog has got me bad. I cannot quite focus. But that too is relaxing.

It’s been a while since I’ve been able to properly separate my work day from my home day.

Next time I hope my home day is a bit more productive.

Day 242 – Requirements

Not much thinking today either.

My gym routine this morning was a bit shorter than it usually is. My first class in the morning made it abundantly clear that I shouldn’t attempt the second class, and the instructor insisted on the same fairly forcefully. Somewhere along the way on my trip to Melbourne I have done something that knotted some muscles in my left hip.

So I just walked out 30 minutes on the treadmills to cool down a bit before my gym-shower.

As a result of cutting one class I got to my massage appointment a good 40 minutes too early so I reclined the car seat and listened to an episode of Nerdist while I waited for time to pass.

The massage was very helpful. Apparently it was not just my hip, but also my left leg, my lower back and my neck that were in equally bad shape. The work on the leg was too intense to relax through, but even the painful pressure felt good in its own way. The back and neck however were sufficiently soothing that I threatened to fall asleep (again? I think I actually may have snored briefly once).

The rest of the day was spent not achieving much around the house.

And I’m glad I wasn’t tempted to go to Wet’n’Wild, because the storm that rolled through around 4pm would have been a serious spoiler to any fun I might have hoped to have had.

Instead I watched some TV and pondered bulk data storage, personal data privacy, backups and life journalling. I may draw some sketches over a movie tonight; I have some ideas I’d like to develop out to see where the tricky parts are. I more and more just want to own my own information, thankyouverymuch. So first, requirements.

Day 235 – Kinokuniya

First of all, lest I leave you wondering, the gym went well this morning. When I said I had been unwell earlier in the week, Nikki was very concerned that I shouldn’t over-exert myself; I was more concerned to properly separate my week and my weekend. Her classes always fill me with some trepidation upfront, and end it calm and satisfaction. This weekend was no different.

As I was driving home I saw the most terrifying thing ever. I wish I had been able to take a picture without feeling even more terrified of my snapping-while-driving. A big motorcycle overtook my car; it was doing one of those weaving-around-through-slow-cars moves.

The driver was wearing shorts and a t-shirt. Which is bad. Terrifyingly bad. But he made his own decision and that’s fine. He had what I assumed to be his daughter on the back. By the look of her, probably a 12-year-old. Also, in shorts and a t-shirt. And he looked like he was showing off a little for her entertainment. I try not to let the images invade my mind’s eye, but I still physically cringe.

I bought a very quick coffee along the way home. And then I had two very quick sandwiches at the kitchen bench. I had to catch a train into the city with Lexi for some quality nothing-to-do-with-helping-her-study time.

On the platform waiting for my train I encountered the first batch of teenagers travelling to the city. Overhearing their conversation I learned a great many things that aren’t fit to blog, as well as the fact that apparently “selfies” are cool once more. Clearly Ellen is the modern-day trend-setter for the 18-25 crowd.

I had to wait at the next station for Lexi to get there. Luckily I had brought supplies, including my bluetooth headset, allowing me to enjoy some Dan Savage while I was waiting.

At the station, a small accident occurred on the stairs. A girl had slipped and was curled up on the stairs not getting up. Her friend looked concerned for her, then concerned for the time, then distraught at missing the opening act for the music festival that all the teens on the trains were heading for. Plans are stressful. She didn’t cope well. The toppled girl managed to stand up later and get up the stairs, presumably on her way to the hospital to get checked out.

Along the way to the city we encountered a batch of bogans that seemed to spend most of their time in between carriages to smoke. Three-four of them. Crammed into a tiny space outside between moving carriages. It’s a miracle nothing went wrong. They also were very obsessed with selfies.

Once we got to Central the party girl of that group was trying to entice Lexi and myself to come along to the music festival. She was Thai. She didn’t speak much English. She acted very drunk, regardless of whether she was or not. We tried to politely decline, and she wasn’t taking the hint. Luckily Bogan-Mum stepped in and helped us out there.

The first main feature of our trip was a visit to Kinokuniya in the city. It is a store containing many “Books” which are bound bundles of paper that contain words that form coherent stories when read in sequential order.

I was more interested in having a browse in the comics section. I had never partaken of this particular section of nerd-dom before, but I am enjoying The Walking Dead, and I have heard many good things about the comics on the Nerdist podcast. And I decided I wanted to dive in.

I walked out with compendium one and two, which cover a good chunk of the available issues. I haven’t opened them yet. I intend to shortly as a reward for finishing this post.

Next, Lexi led me down Pitt Street to go to Westfields. I wasn’t sure where exactly we were going, and I was no more enlightened when she led me onto the longest escalator I had ever seen. It was the express escalator directly to level 5 of the centre.

It contains the most wondrous food court I’ve ever seen. It has no McDonalds. It has no KFC. It has mostly (only?) stores that I had never seen before. I need to go here many more times to sample more of the wares.

For “lunch” I had a chicken shish on top of a pile of vegetables. I felt slightly smug at the lack of carbs. Then we went to the pastry shop and I had a delicious “Pistachio Cake” with the worst hot chocolate I’ve had in a long time. They know their cakes. They flub their hot beverages.

I had a great day.

And now I need to have a quick outside-shower (don’t ask), and then I shall open Compendium One and have a look at what’s inside.

Day 223 – …

I’m not quite sure what to do with today.

On the up-side, the intermittent stomach-ache I’ve had since the middle of last week seems to finally have disappeared. On the down-side, it didn’t do so before making me miss out on Wet’n’Wild tonight. (I hope the weather keeps for later this week)

Work was a mixed bag of urgent, important and trivial. I think on the whole I achieved something, even though I cannot quite articulate precisely what.

And the gym was a struggle. But by choice. I don’t feel too bad after pushing through some extra weight, so either I’m improving quickly… or I’m going to pay for it tomorrow.

Watched some Fringe.
Helped with some analysis.
Played some Isaac.
Browsed.

It doesn’t feel very productive, but there was a whole lot of “stuff” in the day.
And now I’m just tired.

Maybe I’ve spent today too much inside my own head?

Day 181 – Ginger

I followed through on my massage this morning. It wasn’t as excruciating as I was fearing; not at all actually. I disclosed the state of my shoulders right up-front, and other than a little extra care with the wet towels there proved to be no need to worry.

Remarkably, with the massage oil, even very firm pressure didn’t hurt (other than where there were knots in my muscles). So that was good.

For the rest of the day I had been banished from sunshine though. I had been told in no uncertain terms that I was not to let the sun touch me. Which was easy enough in the morning (overcast) when I went out to my massage, but by the time I returned the sun was poking out from behind the clouds. It’s remarkably how much a few rays can sting (Sting-Rays?) even when exposed only for a few seconds.

I was scuttling from shade-to-shade for the rest of the day.

Most of my time was spent inside arranging pictures for the eBaying of the redundant pieces of technology. Perhaps using a DSLR for eBay pics is a bit of overkill, but I was enjoying myself, so there! 😉

I had a brief trip outside to Rouse Hill for some shopping.

And then I got lathered up with Aloe again before heading out to the gym. It’s a really odd sensation when it dries caked on. Every time I moved, it felt like my surface was cracking under the strain. It’s a very unsettling skin-pulling-sensation. 10 minutes into a Cardio class I stopped paying attention though; being out of breath has this way of making everything else in the world seem trivial.

Getting through my plans is proving slower than anticipated. But so long as there’s forward momentum I’m not going to complain. Relaxing is more important than achieving right now.

And on that note; I think some sleep is called for now.
