51 – 100 Kitchen Designs
…speaking of kitchen renovations…
100 décor / design ideas and not a single one really jumps out and grabs me. Not that I’ll let that stop me from a renovation; it just means I’ll have to make it all up as I go along instead.
The idea to renovate the kitchen has floated around long enough. I think it was one of the first plans we discussed after moving in here; the kitchen is too cramped, we need to do something about that sometime. I think after 7-odd years, it’s finally time for “sometime” to become a bit more concrete soon.
For one thing, how else am I going to make my goal of having a 50+ person cocktail party if there is no proper well-designed kitchen to work with? I wouldn’t be able to live with the shame!
For another, I’ve tried to take food photos a few times, and I’ve experimented with video… but there is just no way to do it well in the current layout.
Not that this is going to be easy.
The laundry will get dismantled as part of this plan. We do not really need it as a separate entity. I’d rather have the extra space getting rid of that room would create, and put the washing machine under the kitchen bench somewhere. The tricky part was always determining whether the laundry has any load-bearing walls (apparently not), and figuring out where to put the litter tray for the cats (there is a garage-related plan for that problem).
That will create enough space to have a very roomy bench wrapped all the way around a much longer wall. And enough space in the middle for a proper kitchen island as well. We will be able to accommodate an army of chefs simultaneously.
I have only two more minor challenges left.
Working out the design details for the kitchen, drawing up some rudimentary plans, and going to Ikea to scope out materials and ideas. That last part is the most important part of this challenge.
And I’ll have to sort out the funding for this exercise. If the bathroom has been any indication so far, renovations always cost more than you could possibly expect.
Exciting times ahead.
